It's mostly carbon—that's why it burns in the air
It gets all that gritty carbon from the CO2 that it breathes from my air
It just needs some sturdy ground roots just to hold on and get a little drink, just like me

Growing up, we were a walking district
I never road on a school bus in my youth
That means we never had a snow day—they were pretty strict
Because a bus gets stuck when the road is slick
But you can walk when the snow is three feet deep
Until your legs are feeling like freezer meat
It's alright as long as you teach yourself to get used to the cold and the shivers in your mouth
I remember walking my friend home with no shoes
Found the frozen glove on the fence down my street
Sitting down and watching the neighbor kid cry when the ice cream lady spit in his eye
Ride our bikes to the lake to make a wish
Wondering how they don't fall through the ice when they fish
How it is nobody I knew even cried when the kid in my class got shot and died
